About this collection

This collection consists of index cards with personal details about Alabamians who served in the armed forces during World War I. Information recorded may include name, race, age, date and place of birth, home address, date and location of induction, units served in, rank, engagements, wounds, dates and locations of service, date of discharge, and other remarks. The amount of information varies on each card.

Cards are arranged first by county and then alphabetically by surname. Names have been transcribed exactly as they were typed or written, so there may be mistakes or inconsistencies in spelling. Therefore, while it is possible to search by name, it may be more useful to browse by county and surname initial.

Digitization of the cards is underway, so only a portion of the collection is online at this time (see the list below for available counties). Additional material will be posted as it is completed.
